What is your “why”? What drives you to do this important work each day?

I will never forget the spark that came into me after having my own Indigenous Student Support Worker in my last year of high school. Being seen, heard, and cared for in a space that previously didn’t recognize me for all of who I am. I’m driven to help our youth have every confidence in themselves to be who they are, and who they want to be, proudly.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

What I enjoy most about my role is seeing familiar faces walking towards our shared space, knowing our youth feel comfortable and safe to be whatever version of themselves they need to be in our time together.

What would you most like families to know about the role of Student Support Workers in HRCE?

Families should know that we are an advocate for their kids in many different ways. We can be a gentle first point of contact to move forward in a way that feels right for the student and their support system. Whether that be looking for post secondary opportunities, cultural and community connection, struggles in an academic space, etc. Our role is not just to support cultural needs, but the overall wellbeing of Indigenous students and their futures.
